My boyfriend just called me last night drunk and asked me have I ever been addicted to alcohol and I said no I don’t even drink and I think that was him telling me that he is addicted to alcohol and his speech was very bad and kept asking the same questions over and over again we have a 4 month old son and I’m starting to worry because I grew up around an alcoholic in my household but I was very young so I don’t remember much but I want to know what should I do and what could my boyfriend do now being a alcoholic? P. S his dad is an alcoholic and drug addicted, and he’s already addicted to tobacco.

OK does he drink every day and get drunk every day. I'd say yes in that case. I have helped a friend in this respect.

It takes about 12 years to recover is what I was told during an info session last week. If you have money there are detox centres but often they fail.

Do you live with him? I am wondering why you don't seem to know more about his drinking habits.

You're young. If he can't just turn off drinking then I'd suggest you walk away. whilst you are still young. With a young baby I know this is not easy but you still have your youth to offer.

by the way an alcoholic can die with sudden withdrawal of alcohol. Around day 3 is the problem time. So try to establish how much he is drinking. He might have got soppy drunk that one night or he might be getting drunk every night.

If you’ve got a kid together, then you’ve been together for a while, yes? Like a couple years? If he was an alcoholic, you would’ve known earlier on and yet still chose to have a child with him.

If you feel that he’s going down the rabbit hole of alcoholism, maybe it’s time to have a serious talk with him about it. If he’s not willing to address the problem or admit that he has an addiction (if he actually does), then you need to decide what is best for both you and your child in the long term - stay with an alcoholic or split and do co-parenting.

He needs to be in rehab, but he has to hit rock bottom himself and admit he has a problem.
