Are women significantly more selective than men when it come to choosing a partner?

I read that because women have a smaller age range when they are reproductively active and because they invest more effort during rearing of children, they have evolved to be choosier than men when selecting a partner.

As a man and I honestly don't care if my wife isn't good looking or she doesn't have all the desired personality traits I would want. As long as we can hold a stable household together and she isn't having any serious psychological issues, it is fine. It would be nice if we were culturally similar, for example speak the same native language and came from similar economic backgrounds.

But if you ask some women, they often have seemingly pointless requirements in male partners, like they will not marry someone with skinny arms or someone with a beard or someone below a certain height threshold. These factors have no relation with their ability to provide as a father and a husband.

Since attraction is not in anyone's control, I cannot really blame anyone for their preferences. But the knowledge that women are much more selective than men should take the guilt or shame of being unable to find a partner away from many men who are otherwise healthy, hardworking and polite.
