How I understand the bread and wine of Jesus Christ

In the bible Jesus breaks the bread saying that it’s his body and pours the wine saying that it’s his blood, and tells his followers to do this in remembrance of Him.

To me the bread of Jesus is a symbol for the teaching of Jesus while the wine of Jesus is a symbol for the experience of His love.

To eat the flesh of Jesus is to devour the work of Jesus which is the application of His teaching. To drink the blood of Jesus is to love the people of God which is the experience of His love.

Likewise the bread that comes down from Heaven is the truth that comes down from love. And the body of Jesus is the character of Jesus as evidenced through his work. The blood of the covenant is the lovers of his heart, which is poured out for many for the absolution of sins, by overwhelming your life and moral failures with the power and love of God.

That is how I understand the bread or teaching and body or character of Jesus.

He is to be our daily bread

The blood (the wine):

The Catholic belief is that the communion elements (the bread and the wine) “become” the body and blood of Christ as their substance is transformed into those things (thus trans-substan-tiation). The bread and wine retain their accidentalcharacteristics, however, and thus still look and taste like bread and wine. This belief is based not only a a literal interpretation of statements such as “this is my body, this is my blood” but on this whole philosophical framework that makes it possible to believe that the bread and wine really are the body and the blood, even if they don’t look like it. But no it is not cannibalism at all. I believe this because I am catholic myself. An it is part of my faith an other catholic’s faiths. That consuming the bread an wine (After It’s Been Blessed.) it becomes the body flesh an blood of Christ. Because that is within our catholic faith. But it’s absolutely not cannibalism. Cannibalism means that a human Actually killed another human with the purpose of eating that human. The bread and wine is blessed then it becomes the blood and body of Christ. No one was actually killed to create the blood and body of Christ. Jesus blessed the bread and wine at the last supper making it his body and his blood by blessing it. Catholic priest do the same today. So no it’s not cannibalism at all.

Seems like catholic priests/pope are playing God by thinking they can turn bread to blood by giving you bread. It's non biblical

jennifer, there are so many books as well as articles on the internet describing what it means. Have you a study bible on hand? If you don't, I suggest purchase a study bible in the translation you choose, and dive in.

Jesus gave the teaching as one of the very last things He did. It was addressed to his apostles, but recorded an the example of who He was and is to all mankind.

Start at Luke 22:7 where Jesus prophesies the Last Supper. The Last Supper and the understanding of it is described by Paul beginning 1 Cor 11:23.

If I may ask, how do you come to that understanding when He so plainly said "this IS my body" and "this IS my blood", and when in John 6, He said "my flesh is food indeed and my blood is drink indeed"? And paying no mind to all those who walked away from Him after He had said these words?

the way it is supposed to be understood, as a symbol or metaphor of injesting the body & blood of jeshua to strengthen your bond with him in a holy way for this life & the next. It's a mass ritual... it's nothing to interpret because trying to interpret a symbolic ritual is like a dog chasing his tail. It will keep him busy but if he catches it what does gain? the knowledge that he's just been chasing something he already had.

It could also be interpreted as cannibalism. We know cannibalism was practised in northern Europe as part of religious beliefs so telling people bread and wine was flesh and blood would be a good way to introduce them to new faith.

People try to overcomplicate a very simple symbolism, or add more to His covenant than the Bible states. The more experienced (older?) I become, the simpler the symbolism becomes.
