I think both are true. People should do what they can to help themselves, but if it's too much, we should help each other. Some problems are overwhelming.
You don't 'need' to help others, but it's nice if you do.

Also depends on the person but from my experience especially seeing the Manchester attack I saw a lot of people that just went well and beyond out there way to help with not wanting anything in return
Sooo... I guess somebody like your wife, brother, sieter, dad, mother, or close friend doesn't matter? If you were or your mom were drowning, I guess I should just walk by and pretend I saw nothing?
Ya... you say that until you get in a terrible car wrck with most of your bones broken and your face bleeding. You gonna tell me you don't want somebody to call 911? Ya right. This is all talk. Nothing to show for. If you stay true to this, you will likely die quickly. Is this Libertarian logic? Ayn Rand much? Which by the way, she's a hypocrite because she did in fact get government aid at some point. And guess what pushed Sears down the drain? The EXACT method you speak of. No cooperation. Everyone is in a knife fight. Everything gets burned down and they likely all lost their jobs. Wonderful method it must be.
@errorgoodnameunfound That's your choice; what I want does not matter. Would I want help? Sure, but I wouldn't shame you or be mad if you did not. I don't think anyone should feel obligated to help.

We absolutely so, especially if it was someone's fault to begin with.
I'll let this song do the talking
https://youtu.be/Ndpryp2OlUQYou should always help others. That's what love is all about. But at the same time don't let them take adavange over you.
we have an obligation to help one another. that's how we evolved.
You're not obliged to do anything for anyone. Kudos to you if you do, because you are a kind and generous person.
I think you'll find that the more you serve others the better off you are too. Just look at how much doctors make.
In France, you are punishable for not assisting a person in danger.
You don't have an obligation to, its just a nice gesture
i mean i wouldn't want to feel obligated to help some one murder
We need to rise up and join arms and embrace communism! We need to help our brothers and sisters rise from the ashes of capitalism!
Help is nice but shouldn't be relied on.
Both, help those who try to help themselves
You have an obligation to help yourself

@errorgoodnameunfound yeah
You don't owe me to save me
It should be a choice

No, we need only worry about helping ourselves.
Do unto others...
Both
Maybe, to an extent.
