Can't a guy work out? He was probably getting called fat by his buddies and relatives and so he went damn I am getting fat and so he said well time to lose some weight. He wants to look good or at least healthy not saying he wants to be Arnold or anything but probably just wants to get back in shape.
You see if you tell a guy he's fat he will say damn I am aren't I? and then he will say well yeah I better work out get rid of this gut, but if you tell a girl she's fat holy hell you just opened the gates of hell, she will cry, become extremely self conscious about herself and does nothing about it. She either gets from eating her feelings or stays the same, now why is that? All she had to do was say you know what I am getting fat better start running, eating healthier, and hitting the gym.

Guys are weird fellows. I remember I used to be addicted to certain things from time to time. One time it was capoeira, and the next was hardcore lifting.
If anything, it's probably just a phase or that he's really becoming concerned about his health. If he's been distant, then that's another thing all together. But maybe he is working out for you, and you should be happy about that. Kiss him when he gets back or do something to turn him on and he'll be shedding those pounds faster than you can imagine. ;)
personally I think he is probably doing it for both reasons, reason 1 being he has gotten to the point where he wants to better himself and lose the extra weight, and reason 2 is yes he is porbably trying to make himself better for you in turn trying to impress you a little, he wants to look good for you...and on top of that guys are just weird sometimes and go through phases of stuff like this where they want to be super healthy or super lazy

No he is not trying to impress you , but he does want to loss the fat he gained. He wants to look good for you. I say don't make a big deal out of it and enjoy his company.
