1 moWell the argument for owning a home has always been...
- You're building equity in an asset instead of pissing rent money away endlessly.
- You're in control of the asset in terms of maintenance, decorating, etc,
- Your privacy is enhanced when you aren't sharing walls or amenities with others.
I've always owned except when I lived as an expat in the Caribbean for 4 years. I didn;t want to get tangled up in a foreign real estate deal and my employer was paying for the rental of a villa overlooking the Caribbean from clifftop.
- Because I moved around so much and so often the equity building argument didn't work for me. And I was always subject to short term market conditions. I either made a little money or lost maybe $50K. But my losses were covered by my employer, negotiated in advance as part of my employment contract. And I was never there long enough for serious equity building.
- Yeah, you're in control. Whether you like it or not. Home maintenance can be a pain in the ass and expensive. But you are free to do whatever you want.
- The privacy thing is a real benefit. Or it has been for me anyway. I enjoy my solitude.

@thegreenyogi If I were very rich, and equally stupid I would rent a huge place in Laguna Beach, or Dana Point, but why do that, If I could buy a nice place. I own my own home..

I personally rent. Renting fits my lifestyle because I move around a lot, chase good flight deals, and sometimes stay months in another country. Owning a home can be great for stability, building equity, and feeling “settled.” If I chose to slow down and base myself in one city long term, I’d like to own a small home as a base and still travel often. 🏡🌎00 Reply

50 ReplyIt depends on whether or not renting is better in your area. When my parents moved here, buying a home was a good investment, now it's not. Anyone who may see themselves in a home for a long period of time may do a rent to buy system which is what my future sister-in-law is doing, she has a house and the rent is going into buying the house from the landlord. Realistically, my fiancée and I probably won't do this as we don't need a large space and are probably not going to be able to take care of property that well. It's far better to let the complex's groundskeepers deal with the land while we only focus on the house. It also depends on age and children. If you're 40+ and childless, renting is probably better because you don't have too many years to live independently remaining. However, if you have kids (for example my future sister-in-law has 5, the youngest turned 13), in which case you need to keep a decent sized house until the kids all go to college, it's probably better to have some place that isn't a monthly rent based property that will never allow you to buy.

1 moThere are pros and cons of both.
There are a lot of expenses that come up over the years when owning a home and if you ever want to sell it, you should ideally put in some money to get it up to modern standards for the most potential profit. It takes a lot of effort to maintain and can be stressful.
When it comes to rent, yeah you don't own the place, but all the maintenance is handled for you. It's actually pretty convenient and takes all the stress from you.
Ideally I plan on renting for a good while until I have enough "fuck you money" to fuck off from society and build my off grid house.10 Reply
1 moTo own a home.
Because it provides long-term stability, financial security, and a sense of permanence. When you own a home, you’re investing in something that can grow in value over time instead of paying rent with no return. It also gives you more freedom to personalize your space and make it truly yours without restrictions from a landlord.

1 moI own my house, renting means that i'll keep paying for the owner for my stay until he kicks me out, so anyone who's able to afford buying a house, even if it was only one small room, don't hesitate to buy it because at the end of the day, your mind will be comfortable knowing that you're in your own house and no one can kick you out 😌

I own a couple of houses in Australia ( extremely difficult ) easier in US than Aus , it's crazy.
And I rent a small house in Thailand for about 500 AUD per month.
My houses in Australia are worth $800 AUD per week and $560 AUD per week , Gross - taxes and costs.20 Reply
Anonymous(45 Plus)1 moI'm currently renting. My net worth has really blossomed over the past 5 years. To be honest until recently i never felt safe enough financially to make that big of a commitment (i really don't like debt). I mean i've bought my last two cars without financing. That's how much i hate debt. And when you buy a house between the financing, insurance, taxes, and repairs over time, it's like paying for a house three times over. I always said if i buy a house it will be when i can make a cash offer. Which hasn't been possible till revently. But i've rented for so long now, i'm not sure i'll ever buy. When something breaks, it's not my hassle it's the landlord's. And i'm pretty comfy and satisfied where i am. So, unless that changes, there's really no pressing reason to do anything different than i am right now.

1 moI owned in my 20’s then rented for a while , as I moved round the country , now i own again as I’ve set new roots.
Renting was always going to be temporary , it makes little sense financially. The property I have will help seed my retirement should I want to move again or want to - need to downsize dependant on what the rest of my life looks like.
Right now , it’s just a asset10 Reply
u 1 moRenting currently. I have no desire to own a home. It’s significantly more expensive to own rather than rent - mortgage repayments, rates, insurance etc add up to more than just paying rent each week. All I wish for is somewhere stable, comfortable, warm and dry for me to live and raise my kids in.

1 moJoining the military and moving around constantly poo pooed on me owning a home. When I do get the chance to basically, do what I want... I've downgraded my dreams to living out of the back of an insulated box truck. That might change if housing prices change for the better... but I doubt that.
10 ReplyI am both , now that I experienced both , I actually prefer renting , mainly because owning a home comes with a lot of responsibilities that are put on you , especially if something breaks , or needs repaired , , when you rent , it’s not your responsibility, so it’s less stressful , so once my house sells , I plan on renting again

1 moWhere I live, renting a home for ever is actually cheaper than buying and owning. Cause the upkeep cost and taxes that you'll have to pay on top of the loan for it makes rental cheaper. I mean if you can buy a house out of pocket, you'll be definitely cheaper but nobody can do that.
10 Reply I own my home. Paid for and everything! Only need to pay my rent (property taxes), Home owners insurance, maintenance and repairs, mow grass, shovel snow and upkeep. If that is what you like. Then ownership is the way to go. People I know that rent. Take vacations and have lots of leasure time! But have nothing to show for their money spent on renting!

1 moI own a home because it’s an asset, and I can also deduct the interest and taxes off my income tax, but it’s not easy to actually buy a home if you don’t have the money for a deposit in closing costs. Renting you just own nothing and you can’t deduct any of it off your income taxes.

u 1 moI rented a home from 2018-2025. It was convenient but I was not accumulating any value in my home. I married Helen in April, 2024 and e bought a home in August, 2025. We are both much happier now!

1 moWe rent our appartment. Besr thing? The landlord is responsibe for all repairs to the buioding. No bills for replacing heating boiler, for example. We don't worry about selling if we want to move. We just give notice then move.
10 Reply1.4K opinions shared on Travel topic. We are renting because the average house price here is $1,074,700, and for that we still can't get the kind of house we would want. We rent, but we have everything we need here.

We own, it's over half paid off. Couldn't imagine renting. It's so nice to be able to do whatever you want with your home and land, plus rent is nearly as expensive in a lot of places.
