Why do guys say "I can't believe you're single"?

So I'm talking to this guy... we went on one date already last week and he set another one up for this Friday. Anyway, we were talking yesterday and he told he that he "can't believe that m I'm single!!" And asked me if I turn down a lot of guys... Anyway, I do feel like I'm a good catch, but I feel like there are plenty of other girls who are awesome who are single too. So what do guys mean when they say this? Just trying to flatter you? Or Are they trying to figure out what's wrong with you?

If your are hot then we assume you are psycho crazy if you are single and we wonder what is mentally wrong with you that made you single. It's a surprise when you seem sane so that is the usual response. Define "plenty". There's 100M more men than women before even considering attractiveness or sanity. The holy trinity of hot, sane, and single is actually as rare as total solar eclipses viewable from any one particular spot (about one every few thousand years). Most are in fact taken, psycho/have issues, or fat/ugly or a combination thereof.

I have said that (more than once), because in my imagination, the prettiest, smartest, most well-adjusted people pair off quickly. And it leaves marginally defective people like me hoping to find a decent (if not fantastic) partner. It doesn't mean anything if by random people. I get told that often until they hear my reasons and then all of a sudden turned off like a light bulb. I honestly just hate the fact people bring that up. However, your already going on dates with somebody, so more and likely he's very much attracted to you and it's more than just your looks. It's not flattery, it's more of honesty.

Guys say that because almost every single worthwhile/girlfriend-material girl is taken! It's honestly shocking when a "good catch" is single. I would take it as one of the highest forms of flattery, if I were a girl.

Most guys expect attractive girls to be taken or have a lineup of guys to choose from. When they find a girl that doesn't meet this, its a shock to their world. Like, "this shit actually happens?" Its a pleasant surprise, but its unexpected.
