Popularised notions of alpha and beta are pretty retarded (too black and white), and anyone who aspires to be alpha on that basis really doesn't understand, very well. However the terms have some descriptive and instructive utility.
As a meditator, it definitely seems like you fluctuate between different brain-wave states. There's inevitability about cycling through all of them, including the generally perceived to be the worst and weakest (presumably beta and delta); where despite how mighty you dream to be, this is really a state of denial that is barely papering over the simmering fearfulness and submissiveness.
The upshot to this is manifold. I'm definitely shy, and don't have the most shall we say, conventional approach, socially, and yet, I definitely often find myself in higher brain wave states where as I say, I am relaxed, focused and utterly fearless (to the extent that this is possible in the human body). The frequency with which I find myself in these states has increased gradually through meditation. This implies that certain aspects of personality may predominate, but they can do so in so called, 'higher' brain wave states.
Now to more practical matters, most people misunderstand meditation. It is mostly used as a form of escape from so called karma, which is basically, your subconscious, which houses your repressed unpleasant past experiences, all the psychological trauma, fear, depression, anxiety, all the good stuff...
Now if meditation is used as an escape, then as most people report, it may well help for a while, but the results will be superficial. If on the other hand, you use it to revisit those past events, repressed fears, traumas, and work through them, and allow yourself to feel shit, then the fear underpinning them starts to dissolve, and you find yourself less bound by these experiences, and more in higher brain wave states.

Yeah it suvks being beta, bit you can reach alpha by finding confidence, through getting in shape to just forcing yourself to talk with chicks and gradually getting better at it.

Body build, character, charisma, self confidence, inteligance and then there's money and sucess. Everyone loves a winner.
you can't be shy, i was once shy, now after just breaking out of my shell I am more alpha than my friends. its such a better life style, and you know it. CONQUER THAT FEAR
Don't worry about being an "alpha male" since it gives a lot of people incorrect ideas. You need to learn traits often associated with that phrase like confidence and assertiveness, but you have to focus on being the best possible "you" you are.
