Why is my boyfriend making jokes about engagement rings?

He was making a joke asking how I would feel if he got me a glass engagement ring instead of a diamond. I said hell no. He asked what my dad would say too. He said well if I got you a glass ring you can have more than one diamond ring.

i know he's just teasing but why is he talking about rings to me?
