Does it seem like my ex still cares about me?

Why would my ex agree to catch up with me, reply to my social media messages and even still respond, after I go a bit over the top with the deep and meaningful messages?
the break up was a long time ago. So it’s not new. According to him we will always be good friends.
Could it be because he cares for me at some level?
he could have blocked me by now but hasn’t.
Does it seem like my ex still cares about me?
