I wouldn't say men feel pain longer after a break up simply because they are men. I do know that if a guy really cares it can take six months to a year to stop hurting.

I think this is all really depends. Who initiated the break up, why there is a need for break up, the "back up plan" after a break up. Things are not always cut and dry.
