The discrimination I have seen regarding women in STEM have only been positive so far, both online and in real life. If you're a girl who has a moderate level of expertise in algebraic geometry or AI you'd be treated like a unicorn princess by the community.

What's your work that you asked about and received derogatory remarks XD? I presume it's not hard science?

It's more computer science based work such as programming in python. It never happens to me in real life people just seem surprised in online where all the negativity happens.

In regards to women in STEM, I've only seen positive descrimination so far, including special scholarships, programs by tech companies such as Tyco that I think if more women went into the various stem fields, they would mainly be welcomed with open arms.

That's by the companies and universities.

If you log on to forum websites, or meet some stuck students, it is in fact very different.

I am aware of how many people find women in STEM a positive thing, and I appreciate how it is changing, yet you still have that negative fraction of people that most girls I know tend to focus on.

There is no social conditioning that tells women not to pursue science and mathematical careers. Infact, schools are designed to help young women but not young men. We tend to learn differently than women. Our brains our hardwired different. Sure there are variations but for the most part men and women are not the same. We are interested in different fields. If a man or woman wishes to pursue a male or female dominated career they can.

    This isn't hard to understand.

We definitely need more people in STEM. I mean it's our future.

So we welcome in any women planning that career path.

      Couldn't agree more.

I know it's not all males who discriminate against women, but a lot do and those people just need to be educated that there's nothing wrong with a woman doing the same job as you.

Why don't we talk about the gender divide in higher education, why is it that its only a problem when there aren't enough women, but when men continue to fail and fall, that is equality?

@genuinlysensitive The figures clearly speak for themselves on 14% of young girls want to become scientists.

Nobody said it is okay for men to fail and fall, but what I'm focusing on in this MyTake is a clear divide in the career path I want to pursue.

The problem as you said is because women aren't "choosing" to become something. That isn't a problem, that is women choosing. However, there is a real problem in the fact that we as a society have created a hostile educational environment towards men.

Women are more than welcome into STEM fields. Most of them are biologically wired towards social sciences rather than hard sciences so they only have themselves to blame.

Are they really biologically wired to social sciences or is that a narrative society have created?

"Hard sciences" phrases like this are why people get driven away. They're not hard, just time consuming. If you practice nothing is hard. Things are only hard because you don't know them.

No no, "hard", "soft".. look at those two words. If it was about difficulty, it'd be "hard" and "easy".

Hard science is concerned with very concrete things such as math and physics.

Soft science concerns itself with more abstract concepts such as human psychology and economics.

100% incorrect. If you were in STEM, you'd know that.

This is not the case at all in California.

From community college to CSU campus to a UC I’ve had the privilege of working with women in STEM courses. Let me tell you in science alone 70% of the courses were filled with women, with the men heavily under represented.

There were even programs in summer that invited middle/high school girls in the university to help them get excited over the programs.

Firstly I am not "bitching" speaking out would be a more accurate term.
Secondly men do speak out about their issues, if you are active on this website you will see the amount of men rightfully speaking out about their issues.

It's not that easy to go to califorina, and why should I run away from my city, when I could try and help it?

I didn't stop them going down a cause I didn't want them to do. They all know their own minds , 3 of them went to uni. The eldest thought it was a waste of time. The other 3 , one is a nurse in the navy , one is a teacher , and one is business manager , all very happy in what they do...

Utter rubbish. Assumes it's conclusion. You completely miss the part were women don't WANT to be in STEM, and trying to rig the game to force them into it doesn't work. You assume that in a "perfect" world, women and men would be equally represented, but that's just not the case.
STOP trying to turn women into fake men. You're making things worse.

I'm not trying to force anyone to work in a particular field. All I am saying is take more of an interest in the future.

And WHY don't women want to work in STEM? You don't ask that question do you?

There's no such thing as turning women into fake men. Wanting to make them aware of their future is turning them into fake men?

Actually, I DID ask why. Turns out, why doesn't matter. Your goal of having equal representation of men and women in STEM assumes there is or should be equal interest. There isn't. For a number of reasons completely unrelated to the fields themselves...

If girls don't want to be scientists look at why they don't want to be scientists, don't just leave it, some of them haven't even been properly introduced to the subject, if they're not properly introduced to it how do they know they like it or are any good at it?

      They don't.

umm no, if girls don't want to be scientists, let them do what they do want to do, don't push science on them like some crack dealer. You are for some reason assuming that if both genders got introduced to science the same amount, they'd both like it equally, but this is bullshit.

Different people have different dispositions towards different things. Lot's of girls are becoming scientists, by the way, but still it is more likely that if you take a sample of 40 boys and 40 girls and give them the same intro to science, the boys will be more interested.

Why is this? BECAUSE GENDERS ARE DIFFERENT AND THEIR BRAINS ARE DIFFERENT and who cares why boys like science more, it makes them better at it if they like it more so let the kids who like it do it and the ones who don't do w/e they wanna do! We do not need 50% men and 50% women in every job this is insanity, what a load of communist rubbish!

Their brains may be different but that doesn't mean they cannot do the same thing.
They may do the same thing differently, but come to the same conclusion, one way may be more efficient than the other but I'm positive whoever has the more efficient way can teach it to the other person.

It's like long multiplication. There's the grid method, and then there is the traditional method both have their pros and cons
      for example:
The traditional method is quicker but may be confusing for visual learners
      Whereas
The grid method is more visual but is slower

And again nobody is forcing girls into science, but girls especially of working class backgrounds will not even get introduced to the subject. You're completely missing my point.

Why don’t they? It’s a valid question. They all want the same thing - trouble is too many of them want it accomplished different ways, so instead of agreeing on the main issue they end up disagreeing on the smaller issue and nothing is accomplished.

Uh huh. It's all genetics. Nothing to do with the culture at all. Nothing to do with the assholes who tell young girls that they suck at math and science. If you're a girl, that's it, you should know that you could never be better than a man at maths and science.

Why? Because... genetics. Just accept your fate, women of the world.

Funny, I remember an Austrian painter saying the same thing about the Master race...

Are you going to say the same thing about Blacks and other minorities? That Black people aren't in STEM as much as white people, because OH, they're genetically not as good as whites to be scientists and engineers? That it has nothing to do with racism and culture, and just something to do with their brains or their genes- that they just don't make good scientists and engineers.

I can't believe that we're living in 2018 and people still think it's fine to say that every single choice that women make is because of... biology. That somehow, we live in a social vacuum, and it's 100% biological differences. And yet, they are not so free with those comments when talking about race.

@dantetheexplorer Agreed. Society has made these gender roles, and whenever somebody tries to break them, they're looked down on.

Yes men and women do have biological differences.
Men are naturally physically stronger than women.
Information is processed differently through the brain.

But that doesn't mean information cannot be processed through a female's or a male's brain.

The few that are in the field are sought after by companies who want to show how equal they are. Meanwhile females don't even live up to their male counterparts. #inequality
