"How do you serve our country?" Then don't pry if they something is classified. I have a friend who was Spec Ops, classified means they can not and will not tell you and they will end your friendship as the cost of him breaking that is at the very least time in prison, but it could also lead to both parties evolved being executed for treason. At least that is what he said. He may have been messing with me. He does that from time to time. He just didn't seem to be kidding.

He shouldn't have any problem telling you what branch of the military he is in. He won't be bothered by that. But many jobs in the military, even if they aren't that secret of a thing, they don't want them telling others what they do. So he might not be allowed to say what his job is even though it's not like it is top secret. I'd say don't ask what he does. If it is OK for him to say what he does, he will probably tell you anyway.
I have a friend who is training for the navy. I interviewed him; and he answered some. He was kind of vague about certain questions/answers.
I would suggest you first read some books on that. I understood more about the way he thinks or is by reading the book No Easy Day.
Before that you can just ask him if he is in navy, marine or etc. I don't think he will get offended by that.
You can ask him simply what he do but don't ask too much, they have things that have to stay privatem
Army, marines, air force would be what's your MOS. Navy is rating. Just ask

"Which branch?" (for asking military peeeeeeps)
"Which branch?" (asking where an old lady's cat got stuck in tree)
"Which branch?" (Weird speech impediment dude asking what cereal to get)
"Which branch?" (Someone asking what kind of ranch you'd like while stumbling on their letters)
"Which branch?" (FOR DA BABBABBABAABABABESSESESESS)Just ask away. Maybe he wants you to ask, because that also shows him that you show interest in what he does in regards to his career.
Example: "[Said Person's Name] May I ask, what branch of the military are you in?" :)
-I too wear a uniform, & I doubt you could ask in a disrespectful way..."What's your branch and MOS?"
And if he is in the army and feeds you some shit like "Ninety Seven Bravo", tell him to speak English. Same goes for Marines, but our MOS's are things like 0311, 0421, 1369, etc.Just say something along the lines of "You mentioned you're in the military, what job do you do?" Or "what do you socialise in?"
Just ask. There's no disrespectful way. "So, what exactly do you do in the military?" or "what area are you in?"

You just ask him what he does. Soldiers are human too.
Just ask. He's probably going to overexagerate to make himself seem more badass, though. Probably in spec ops
Just ask. He'll be glad to tell. Hopefully you aren't chatting with some scam artist in Nigeria.
Just ask him what is his MOS and they will usually tell you
I would just ask but it is s possibility he can't tell you
