Meaning of getting someone’s number while out at the bar/club?

Since turning 21, I’ve gone out twice with the hopes of making friends in addition to just dancing and having a good time.

Both occasions, people have asked for my number, and I’ve happily obliged thinking their goal is to hang out again together sometime.

But I’m starting to get the impression that most folks really don’t care to reach out again/stay in touch even if they asked for my info. What’s going on? Is there some secret social cue I’m missing?

Going to a club/bar is the old version of dating apps. Generally in locations where one's purpose is to probably get drunk, most people asking for your number are trying to smash. It's naive to think otherwise.

I mean it’s not I haven’t made any friends doing this. One of the dude I met while dancing is now a friend of mine and we’ve gone to lunch a few times, but perhaps you’re right about me putting too much faith in most folks intentions… I appreciate the insight.

one of the toughest life lessons a young woman has to learn is... men never want to be just friends, we need sex or we can't be close to you.

I mean, I date women almost exclusively so these interactions weren’t only dudes (first occasion was at a local lgbt club). I’m no stranger to the fact that most dudes only go to the club looking for a hook up, but ig I just thought these interactions were a little bit more nuanced than that…
