There is this girl that I like and I get self conscious and nervous around her. She noticed that because she has asked me like 3 times now why I get nervous around her.
On the third time when she asked me that she also said “Do you feel nervousness around girls? Have you never talked to girls? Don’t you have a girlfriend?” and I told her that I don’t.
I’m not sure why she’s asking me that if she can pick up that I’m nervous.
Probably she suspects you're into her and is making her suppositions (perhaps talking about that with her other close friends too) and now she is committed to find out if her sensing was right or wrong, without actually being interested in you but just for the sake of discovering and proving her right.
This is my main assumption, but of course it doesn't really cancel the chance she is also considering you as a potential date in her head. So if you like her and are also meeting her sometimes, I think you can do a couple of things:
1) You can ask her out without letting her ask more about your nervousness, because asking a woman out with class and determination is way more convincing and attractive than being forced by her to pull the truth out from your mouth (and if it happens it would look like if you knew you didn't have chances with her and so you wanted to hide it, but that also describes you automatically as someone unworthy). Do not use an approach like being passive/miserable/sorry while asking her out, but look like someone who knows what he is looking for and thinks to have chances (without directly telling that you think you have some, of course).
2) You can distance yourself but with serenity, without looking depressed or victimistic, like if you're cool and positive alone independently, to make her chase you a bit. If you talk regularly and you suddenly become distant (replying later to texts, mentioning other female friends you're busy with, etc), she will probably "compensate" by searching more contact with you or to catch more your attention, if she likes what you're doing now and wants to keep it. If she does, it could increase the chances she would accept a date with you. This is anyway called "playing games", but given your age and given the competition you have around I think you can allow some initial game of this sort. And beware she could play games too in response, to understand if you are or not.
No woman “just does” anything without purpose or agenda. It is how they are wired. If you are intern now is the time to ask her out…
