Why I think GaG is falling apart?

I know I’m not the only one. We’ve had GaG users leave (or haven’t logged into Gag since the update has happened), irrelevant update features, Administrations taking advantage of their position. WHAT IS HAPPENING TO GAG?

Current Updates:

Closed questions= YES! The most hated update that was implemented during this week. When you select MHO to one gender, your question will be automatically closed, not giving any other user (who hasn’t commented on your question yet) no chance of sharing their advice and maybe some vital experiences that they have experienced. Or even better yet, if your question hasn’t had any responses within 24-48 hours, it will be closed. YAYYYY GAG!!! You’ve come up with the most useless feature!!

Private opinions= Isn’t that what the Private messages feature for? I mean people have a conversation on someone’s comment anyways, why make it just between the asker and the opinion owner only? I doubt they’re conducting a master plan to take down the question topic in the most exaggerated way.. Why so mysterious? Yes opinion owner, if you get the whole army involved to ask your crush out maybe you’ll achieve something with your crush maybe.. just maybe..

Drowning in notifications= Can anyone hear me? I can’t see? I have too many notifications that has nothing to do with me. Oh that’s nice that, that person gave the MHO to that person, that’s really nice of them. Oh I see that person has made a new question, I’m sure I would have figured that out when I’m browsing on Live Feed. (I know this feature can be controlled in your settings) Which I mean, I can give it some leeway, I do like some of the notifications I get which is alright.. I suppose.

Why is Gag more than happy to tell us that we can’t do certain things, when they cannot follow their own rules? Does it not outline it in the FAQ and policies on Gag? I’m sure as hell think that everyone was infuriated with that post but I’m glad you guys took it down.

But seriously Administrations. I do not mean any harm towards you. I would like to think that you are here to set a good example to everyone on gag (even if that means, following your own rules), I know we are all human, I can look over this.

GaG Users leaving?

Every time I hear a Gager has left, I’m like

It’s disheartening. I know (one way or another) we all get close and make good friendships with certain Gag users online, so it’s disappointing to see people go because of this update. I know there are other reasons in the equation, but let’s not get into that sort of drama.

I know there is more to this, but all these issues seem to highlight why I think Gag is falling apart. I know some people will have different opinions on this, differently than I do, so I respect that.

Anyway, I agree with your points. The closed questions thing really throws me off. I wouldn't mind having the option to close them, but being made to close them eventually without wanting to is silly. If they must have that in place, I think the inactive period should be after a month, not 48 hours. Two days is nothing around here, and I still answer questions from that long ago. Meanwhile, I wouldn't answer a month old question normally.

The private opinions update is odd, too. Oh, great, so now potential creeps can go anonymous and private? Us mods cannot do our jobs if we cannot see the comments being made. Sure, the asker can report the comments, but that is less content for us to check and perhaps hide faster (depending on the level of the mod). I understand wanting a private discussion, but as you said, just take it to PMs in that case. Isn't that what it is there for anyway?

I was annoyed at first with the new notifications, but I'm okay with those now. I updated my settings for what I want to see. However, not getting notifications for my opinions, replies, and mentions is getting on my nerves. That's just as bad as the ghost notification. At least I knew I had a comment somewhere with those.

I'm not usually one to freak out over the updates. I'm pretty indifferent and know I will get used to them, but I am not a fan of this one.

LMFAO! I'm glad you enjoyed the gifs as much as I did! I do agree that change can often be overwhelming, but I think if change is made for the worser (in this case, the recent updates) then people can feel conflicted about adapting to such new changes. I'm not really phased with some of the other updates, but this one certainly ruffled up my feathers 😋

Totally agree what what you stated, though. This is the one update that has actually bothered me. If it can be changed to what I and others have mentioned, I don't think it'd be so bad. Right now, it doesn't work so well.

Mooky, I'm with you 100% on this. It's pretty obvious these new changes weren't really thought through at all. Reason why there where tons of featured questions that were already closed, they actually had to go back and correct that.

The closed questions are quite a bummer, since you have to select an mh within a 48 hour period, and you will get a question selected regardless if you got a good answer or not. How many times you got an answer that even surpassed the one you selected as mh weeks later? And often helpful answers by the way, in the case of more serious/personal questions.

As for the private answers, it's just too off putting for two reasons.
1- As mods, we're supposed to help "regulate" the content for the answers. Now how the hell are we supposed to to that when there is going to be a good number of answers we can't even see. The asker herself/himself often would not be able to tell how offensive/antagonistic or whatever it's the answer itself (think of underage users on this one).

2- Literally, I've seen two guys asking how I look questions and received several private answers. i. e, girls who don't want to go anon so the asker knows what their identities are. See where I'm going here? How I look questions will be turn to a hook up/message me kind of thing. Private answers will only incentive more private answers undermining the sense of community this site is supposed to have.

As for the downvote I have stated many reasons for it to be brought back yet we're still waiting so far. Remember, just two weeks after the downvote feature MANY regulars left, and not only that, but as I predicted the arguments/frets only increased which I'm assuming that is the reason admins wanted to bring that back.

I had 30 new notifications when I logged yesterday, I had to go click each one for them to undo. Then I had to do the checking notifications thing in the settings. It was VERY annoying. Maybe this one is just nitpicking, BUT it does show how all of this was so poorly mishandled.

I was gone when the update happened and came back to 147 notifications. I never complain about updates. I figure it'll just take a few days to get used to. But this is by far the worst update ever. It makes no sense. It's like they're trying to self sabotage. This pretty much sealed the deal on the extended hiatus that I was thinking about taking. This place is no longer fun for me.

People leaving - adaptation is natural, the updates shouldn't be an issue. If they feel the benefits outweighs the negatives, that is their prerogative. Which I don't really see how minor updates can sway an opinion to that extent. The site still provides what it did before. Its still gag

Admins - I haven't see one work enviroment, ever, that doesn't have a few people breaking some rules. I guess it goes with the territory. (For example, If I'm boss, ill use the company card for travel expenses but that doesn't mean employees can)

You can choose which notifications you want to get in your profile/settings page. Uncheck the ones you don't want to get.
The question you mentioned was posted by error; it was meant to be posted on the QA environment to test a feature, however it got posted on the production site that you see. It was removed when the mistake was discovered.

It's the closed questions and waaaaay too many settings for notifications that I don't like. Do I really need notices because a poll I barely remember voting on closed or someone else got MHO?
The only new one I like is a notice if someone I follow posts a question or take.

because it gets clunky and not so user friendly. same thing happened to yahoo and yahoo answers, but on steroids and they fucked up in a single swoop. they chanced the format, font and the way the pages set up. they put the questions on 1 page with a "show more questions" button on the bottom. so you'd click on the question and if you went down like 4 days worth, to get to the same spot, you had to do the same shit over again. good luck answering a question more than 3 days old.

Most of your thoughts I agree with. However, I can understand why they close questions now. It's disappointing, yes. But they have good reason. The reason is because they only have so much server space in terms of saving every question, and every answer. So, they are trying to minimize people posting. Otherwise, they would need to start charging people for the space.

@DivaMonae There was too much of a backlash for them to ignore these issues. I've already seen posts by an admin or two that they are reconsidering the changes, so I'm confident much of it will be rectified within the next 2-3 weeks. We'll probably still end up with stuff like private options for individual responses, but not for entire questions. And we'll probably have automatically closed questions, but with a much longer period, like 30 days or more, and possibly with the option for the asker to close them at a time of their choosing. And I'm 99.99% certain that having a question closed by simply choosing a MHO will be history. Things like the additional notifications will likely just be tweaked to make it easier to clear them. But I'm confident that the clusterfuck which was inflicted upon us will be largely undone. Once they fix those issues, I'm sure they will work on following questions and down voting.
