@Salohcin22 Well, I'm in Engineering. Finance guys can make more by their 30s. Patent lawyers make 6 figures right out of school.
Im in Software engineering, but the average starting is like 68k, the high end is like 100 to 128k at most. What kind of engineering do you do and how long / where / what cool stuff do you work on?

Nice, how do you get patents, and do they help your income? Is there some guide out there or specific books that can teach it all?
100k is rich though. I'll put it to you like this, I grew up with my 9 brothers and sisters with my single mom and she made minimum wage. Which was like I don't know, $12k/yr? We did get help from food stamps though.
When I first saw the "poverty line" I was like "$20k/yr for a family of FOUR who makes that much money?" Lol
"I was so poor that the poverty line was the horizon"- I forgot what song that's from but that's completely me.
@Salohcin22 No I come up with an idea and pitch it to the Senior Fellow engineers. If it hasn't been done before, I'll inquire about getting a patent and someone will do the leg work within the company to look into it. If I get the green light, I have other patents to use as a reference to do the write up. Not all patent are revolutionary ideas. Typically, they're just new ways to use existing technology.

Dang, that sounds really hard! I bet that made you a hard worker though and very grateful for what you have. That's really rough, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It's amazing that you've persevered through that and became a better person though!

Cool, I should look into that more. I tried looking up patent lawyers a while ago, and they don't seem to make that much. maybe when you are that and an engineer you do

$12k for 10 people is incomprehensible. I grew up in a family of 8 with $30k/yr.
Work on applying for college and getting financial aid. You most certainly would qualify.

@Salohcin22 meh, more failures though. I should have graduated by now from college, but nope. Still working on that. I tried going to the military and that failed too. There's so many failures in my life, it's not even funny. But I still laugh lol

@BuchitaBuchys Once you graduate, it should open a lot of doors for you. Whatever you choose, just make sure you'll be happy doing it if you end up working 60 hour weeks.

Don't worry about the failures. I've made that mistake. I feel like successes are measured by how many times you tried and failed. My dad took 8 years to finish a graduates degree and he's pretty well off now, making 128k.
How long it takes to get the degree doesn't matter that much, Just getting it is good and extremely difficult, especially for someone that came out of a situation like that. I think I saw somewhere that the rate of success for situations that are better than yours are way way lower, and close to below the 10%, so you've really accomplished something quite rare that I bet most would fail in your situation.
