After a year of no contact my ex and I started talking again as friends.

i thought that would be fine and honestly that he had changed a bit... I just realised he hasn’t.

His texts are getting more and more frequent and he keeps trying to show off which is annoying me. Last night he sent me 30 pictures and videos of stuff he’s done over the past yeAr just to “update” me. I just said that’s nice and didn’t retaliate...

i dont want to block him (I feel bad because I agreed to being friends before I knew he was going to be like this) but if i just ignore him will he get the message?

Your ex never got over the relationship and now that your talking with him again, he feels in his mind he has a chance to get back together with you again. Unless this is true, dont send mixed signals and end this on a friendly note. Just make your text short and spaced with time in between them. Ignoring him will not help. Just keep acting uninterested and dont be easy to reach. At some point he will get mad and back off. Keep track of his calls and times he shows up if you can. Also keep a copy of conversation on your phone. Not say something may happen, but at some point you may need all of this. Best of luck to you.

Tell him you're not interested, or that it's too much, or that he needs to back off. He's a friend. He doesn't get to monopolize your time. Set boundaries NOW.

Eh... probably not. This really IS the kind of thing where you should make yourself crystal clear. Don't imply anything. Don't beat around the bush and hope he gets the hint. Put your foot down, tell him flat out that you aren't comfortable with the amount of contact that he is initiating.
