Probably the same reason why women say size doesn't matter, or that they don't like the bad boys and just want a nice guy...
Basically, I think women lie to themselves more than men lie to them. If a man takes a woman to the altar and promises to forsake all others, in front of a minister and both of their families, she should be upset when he breaks those promises.
Saying “this is different” in the back seat of a car, piss drunk at 2:00 AM, an hour after you met, and the woman should have no reasonable expectation that the man is telling the truth. They want to be lied to as part of the plausible deniability game.
Women do a similar thing by friendzoning guys they have no intention of going further with.

Because in the romance and hookup society people find it lazy if the guy is upfront and honest. Very few women actually want honest and straight to the point. "Playing the game" of hints, body language, and tactics is the usual route.
