How can I tell if an exteoverted guy likes me when it seems like he hates me?

I have had feelings for this guy for over a year. He goes to my school and we are in the same grade. Last year was my first year at my school but I didn't notice him till half way through the year. In February of last year I went to a school party with him. He didn't ask me to go with him, we were assigned partners. I already liked him so I was really excited! It was a fun evening and we had good conversations. Nothing else happened last year except for I caught him watching me a few times and he only ever said a few words to me, including good morning and bye every so often. I let my feeling sit over the summer and didn't see him the whole summer or text him except to tell him Happy Birthday. I went back to school at the end of summer and definitely still have feelings for him. He rarely says anything to me, sometimes good morning or bye and if I try to start a conversation by asking him a question he only says one or two words. I have caught him looking at me a few times but he quickly turns away. When I sit beside him he readjusts himself and fixes his hair a lot. He talks to everyone else a lot, he's outgoing and is usually cracking jokes, teasing, or laughing. He's also a gentleman and a leader.

All of this because I am an overthinker. When I start to try and figure it all out I spiral. To me it feels like he hates me but then there is that tiny part of me that thinks maybe he does like me. If he hates me I don't know what I would have done to him. I'm kind and caring and I get along well with everyone. I'm not scared of guys and I do talk to them.
