Why does he seem shy to sit next to me?

I’m in a lecture hall class and the seats are practically next to each other. usually I sit next to him w an open seat in the middle but today he even said “oo i think I have to sit next to you today”. I don’t mind I’m just confused why that’s a “problem”.
he’s a talker too, and the professor had to move him to the front, and seemed really reluctant to leave.
