Why would guy act super weird when on the phone with his girlfriend?

I work with someone whos girlfriend calls him pretty regularly during work hours and he just becomes a completely different person. He will answer her call and god for bid you make any kind of eye contact with him when he's on the phone with her (not anyone else). He just becomes super embarrassed and irritable (mainly with me), we work in cubicles so everyone can hear and if he sees you coming or going from your own desk the weird energy will be tossed in your direction immediately.

I have had words with him over snapping at me, in which I proceeded to enlighten him that I work here and at this very desk, at this very spot and if he wants privacy to take himself into the hallway outside the office. Not only does he leave the office now but he leaves the entire floor and stands at the very end of an emergency corridor in the corner on his phone. May I point out that these conversations are not intimate in nature, they do live together and some of our coworkers have even gone on double dates with them soo.. wtf?

The thing is why are you paying sooo much attention to him, that you even know he is not on the same floor and at the end of some corridor? Seems weird on your part... I personally wouldn't give a fuck if he looked at me weird or whatever I would ignore him.. seems like you like him and maybe he can tell so gets irritated with you...

It goes without saying that he thinks you are specifically listening into his conversations, but if they’re meant to be THAT private then it’s best he steps out. As you said, you sit right next to him so you’re going to hear some of what he says. It’s good that he’s excuses himself now, there’s no reason for him to be snappy and rude to you over making a quick eye contact.

Im just curious why a person would get that way at all, yes I hear his phone conversations (all day) but only when she calls is he suddenly beside himself

Conversations with a colleague, client or whomever you’re required to speak to on the phone would of course warrant a far different reaction than talking to his girlfriend. Since you don’t know him on a personal level, or what’s going on in his relationship then it’s hard to understand why he reacts so strongly to feeling eavesdropped on. In any case I’d be glad he dismisses himself instead of snapping at you.

When you are within earshot of this, what do they talk about? I'm just wondering if he is embarrassed that he is getting these calls because maybe whatever it is that she calls about isn't urgent enough for her to call him at work.

It's pretty natural that someone can't be themselves when they are outside. They are careful not to say something they would say personally, when being outside.

Are you sure they’re not intimate in nature? The calls, I mean. Maybe they call each other pet names or something. That could be embarrassing to a guy for his friends or coworkers to hear that.
