Guy is now willing to work for me even if not paid?

I'm a bit bothered because he was once someoned i liked. We were close friends then I began to develop feelings when he worked for me. He rejected me saying he has some priorities like his family.

That was last year. This year he's suddenly back being very sweet and caring, always asking how i am. When i vented that i was overworked, he suddenly said what about if he works for me being that he's looking for an additional job. He said he's willing to even work for me for free when i said i couldnt afford. That bothered me greatly. Why do you think he said that?
