Is it the polite thing to do to accept the number in order to not hurt her feelings (and proceed to not do anything with the number)

or: is it more suitable to immediately kindly decline and say they are taken?
What would your response be, if you were the taken man and a girl offers her number?

That’s what I thought also. I made contact with a man and I offered my number. Later on, I found out he is married.
When I mentioned my number he took it and had a smile on his face and said thank you. Like he was actually flattered or happy about it.
He didn’t text me or anything. But I just don’t understand why he would accept it and this is his response. While he could have kindly said something like “that’s nice of you but I am married”
I thought maybe he didn’t want to hurt my feelings but then again, loyalty and respect to your partner is more important? So that makes me question his intentions

All this ado about "phone numbers" looks very silly to me :)
