I really want to lose weight, how can I do so?

I am looking to lose about 20-30 pounds. I weigh about 185 pounds and I am 5'7.7 in height. I really really want to shed about that much weight off and then work out to gain muscles. Does anyone here have any helpful tips that will help me out? I always have no motivation to do so, and I am always eating bad food that's unhealthy for me..
