Get an ice pack wrapped in a towel and place it on the spot where it hurts for about 20:00, no longer than that or you'll do more damage that you've already got. after that, put a heating pad on it for 20:00 about as hot as you can take it. You can wait a while between these, you don't have to do it one immediately after the other. Maybe half an hour break between each bout. switch back & forth from one to the other. DO NOT sit on the ice or the heat!! Lie on your stomach and put them on your back!
It might be hard at first but, try to walk around The more you can do that the better it'll get. I'd normally walk in a kind of figure 8 around the dining room table and the the kitchen table if you can. Try to make 10 rounds each time, maybe after 5, switch direction so you're not always making your turns in the same direction. If you're any good a drumming, have a bash every so often. moving around while playing will help loosen it up.
Another thing I'd always do, if you have a strong kitchen table, is to sit on the very edge of it as if I was about to fall off and then gently lay back on it facing the ceiling, you'll probably need to pull your legs straight up with you, too as if you're tying to reach the ceiling with your feet. Just lie like that on your back and take big, slow, deep, relaxing breaths and just try to concentrate on relaxing your whole body. It might take 5 or 10 minutes. Chances are fairly good you'll eventually feel something in your back go POP! That's a good thing!
Once you get settled like that, slowly bend one leg so your knee comes towards your head, hold it that way for a moment (you don't need to use your hands), then back up straight, then try to lower it as far as you can to the floor. Let it hang like that then do the same with the other leg. Once you've got them both hung, try the relaxing bits again.
If you can't do it on a table, at least do it on the floor.

That’s good info. My back goes out two, three times a year and leaves me completely disabled! I just put sports cream on it until it eventually goes away. It’s ridiculous how it happens! Last time, all I did was bend over to pick up a coffee filter I dropped and instantly, my entire lower back cramped! I barely made it to the couch!
Another thing I like to do in these cases is to stand at the bottom on the stairs and put one foot on the 2nd (or was it, 3rd) step (at my house, it was a landing) and put the other out behind me as far as I could and then lean forward as much as possible, stretching my back, even wrapping my arms around the upper leg and squeezing as much as possible for a few seconds, hoping to get a crack to come from my back or at least the top of my hip. Then stand up and switch feet and do it again.
About 20 years ago, I got such a severe back pain, when I was finally able to settle down enough to call my chiropractor, I told him, "Either cure me or kill me! I REALLY don't care which!!" I was just getting ready to walk out the door to go see him because there was a slight twinge I wanted him to deal with. I got my bus pass, took about 3 steps and WHAM!!! I started to drop but QUICKLY stopped myself because I KNEW that if I DID drop, it was gonna hurt a LOT worse!! So, I'm not quite standing and not letting myself fall and I can't possibly move without making it worse!! My parents were in the back yard and couldn't heard me screaming for help! Well, mom said she THOUGHT she heard me so, they came in and found me and helped me get over to the kitchen table about 8 feet away. I got ON the table on my back and just laid there for several hours crying like a baby!! Eventually, the pain weakened just a bit but, after several hours of crying, I got tired from it and started to yawn! HOLY SHIT!!! JUST trying to YAWN made the pain come back!! This whole thing started just before dinner time so, my parents had to eat in the living room that night!
I had another bad one about 8 years ago that wasn't quite as bad but, I had to refrain from taking a shit for 3 to 5 days because I KNEW it was gonna hurt like a bitch!! By the time I did go, I sat on the toilet screaming my head off!! Now, I know what it's like to have a baby!!
A few years ago, I found this spray stuff in a white can called, Max Freeze. Sadly, it doesn't last long, about 2 hours but BOY, does it work fast!! One short spritz on the area where it hurts and the pain is gone in a second!! I tried it on my aunt once, too. She was very skeptical but, one blast and she said the pain was gone!!
Oh, yeah! They just come for no reason at all!! I remember, one time, I had just finished using the toilet and went to the sink to wash my hands. I bent over to start and TWING!! There went my back!!
Another thing that helps ME, anyway, is to have a bash on the drums. Not only does it help to move around a lot like that but, it can be relaxing and help get those muscles grabbing your spine to let go. So, I SUPPOSE that just sitting up straight in a chair and swinging back & forth can help, too. I've never thought of it before or tried it.
Basically, what goes on is that your muscles feel your back is in bad shape and they latch on for dear life trying to keep you from making it any worse but, in turn, THEY make it worse, or at least FEEL worse. This is one reason relaxing as much as you can helps. When I'm on my back on the kitchen table doing that leg lifting thing, when I'm done, I just lie there and let my legs dangle over the side while I take a number of long, slow, deep, relaxing breaths. With each breath, I get even more relaxed than I thought I already was. Quite often, while I'm doing that, I can feel and/or hear my back pop! Then, I know I've done it some good!! Sometimes, while my feet are up in the air on that table, I'll just let then drop over the side and THAT could get my back to pop. But, if you don't get a pop at first, don't force it, it's just not ready, yet. Getting off the table: I suppose the best way is to roll to the end of the table and have a chair you can grab onto, nearby and gradually lower yourself from the table into the chair.
Is your problem more skeletal or muscle? I feel mine is more along the lines of muscle tightness. It’s like I can feel the muscles spasm, cramp, do all sorts of crazy shit! I’ve never seen a dr or chiropractor, mainly because it does go away after a few days and it’s far and in between. I definitely know how you feel! Once I make it to a couch/bed/chair, I can get relief but any movement kills me! One time, I thought I was gonna have to call rescue! At my age, I also worry about the pain putting stress on my heart, the pain is that bad! Takes the breath right out of me! It just started happening a few years ago. It’s funny, I used to laugh at people that suffered from back pain, how they would walk and constantly wince from pain, but it is no fucking joke! By far the worse pain I go through!
I would guess it's muscular but, a number of people in my family have had back pain because we're so tall so, if being tall has anything to do with it, that'd mean it's more of a skeletal thing, I guess.
My chiropractor will just do a little adjusting and use either a Braun massager on it of these electrode thingies I think are called, TENS. Just four little round rubber pads that you hook up to wires and place on your back around the pain, I think, and it uses electric pulses to massage. It really does help a lot. He only charges about $30, too! I went to this other guy a couple times and he put me on machine after machine after machine, hardly touched me at all and charged me a few hundred dollars per visit and none of it helped! One day, he was telling me about how he was gonna go see Bruce Springsteen at a concert that night so, he had to go buy a guitar for Bruce to autograph! If he's got THAT kind of money to throw away, he doesn't need and won't miss my $300 that I couldn't afford to pay, anyway! I only saw him because he was a mile from my house. The other guy is 3 miles away but is MUCH better!!
