I wanted to write this because of everything that's currently happening in America. I hope it helps someone.

After a black man was brutally and unlawfully killed by four white police officers. People soon after took to the streets to protests this horrible event and demand the equal rights that everyone deserves.

What started out as peaceful protest in Milwaukee, DC, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, and many others cities in America, soon became a horrible angry mob nightmare situation across the country. These mobs not only stold, looted, burned down buildings, and committed other crimes. They destroyed the message that they set out to portray.

Losing their message was largely becaues of a phenomenon of the brain called Group Thinking or GroupThink. Many people don't even know what Group Thinking is yet alone that it is partially responsible for the madness we are watching happen across our country today.

Where did Group Thinking Come From?

The term was first introduced in the November 1971 issue of Psychology Today, in an article by psychologist Irving Janis. Janis had conducted extensive study of group decision making under conditions of stress. He saw certain behavior patterns of one person following anouther, anouther, and anouther. He later named this behavior as Group Thinking.

What is Group Thinking?

Group thinking occurs when a group of well intentioned people make irrational or non optimal decisions spurred by the urge to conform or the discouragement of dissent. Risky or disastrous military maneuvers, such as the escalation of The Vietnam War or the Invasion of Iraq, are both commonly cited as instances of group thinking.

How Do I Recognize It?

To recognize group thinking, it's useful to identify the situations in which it's most likely to occur. When groups feel threatened either physically or through threats to their identity they may develop a strong “us versus them” mentality.

This can prompt members to accept group perspectives, even when those perspectives don’t necessarily align with their personal views. Group thinking may also occur in situations in which decision making is rushed in some cases, with destructive outcomes.

Not a Good Way to Think.

The presence of group thinking can drastically alter the decision making capabilities of a person or entire group, often a preventing a group from arriving at rational decisions. I've actually seen it on GAG before. One person does something and ten others try jumping in. It's pathetic and sad. It's like they can't think for themselves at all.

Some Real World Examples of Group Thinking.

The collapse of Swissair. ...
Gang rapes... Group Killings and more..

What I think a lot of people don't realize, is that the original protesters were legitimate, organic protesters, and they were absolutely justified in protesting what was a horrible act by a handful of police.

People must realize that much/most of the subsequent violence and destruction wasn't caused by those protesters - though some of it was and there WAS some groupthink involved. Most of the destruction was actually caused by predominantly far-left radicals who mobilized and swarmed into action to make things much worse in an effort to cause political chaos. In the past several days, the Minneapolis police have arrested a bunch of looters and vandals, and nearly all of them are from out of state! These people drove in, some from over 1000 miles away, to loot and riot and stir the political pot.

In Dallas, activists had a pallet of bricks delivered in front of a courthouse - right on the street where protests were going to be - knowing that protesters were likely to grab those bricks and destroy the courthouse. There is no construction anywhere near this building, so this wasn't some accident - this was PLANNED by people who are actively looking to cause chaos and destruction of property (and very possibly hurt people in the process).

Atlanta also experienced a huge influx of activists from out-of-state. Very organized activists who targeted specific buildings and tasks. This isn't random protesters (certainly there's some of that mixed in) - these are people taking active violent action. And it is the regular citizen taxpayer who will end up paying for every building and every destroyed car and every destroyed business. Your tax rates will increase, your local fees will increase, your insurance costs will go up, etc. The government doesn't make money - they spend YOUR money, and when they run out, they demand more of YOUR money.

This is going to cost everyone, for a long time, and it's all in an attempt to stir up racial hatred, when nearly every person of every color agreed from Day 1 that what this police officer did was WAY over the line and that he literally murdered this man on camera - and that he needed to be held accountable for it. No one defended those actions or tried to dismiss them - but that's not what these "protests" are about at this point. They're about civil destruction to create social unrest - all at taxpayer expense.

Yup! Even the typically left-leaning news sources had to concede that the vast majority of people who were arrested were NOT locals, but people who were brought in deliberately. And in most cases, the (store) owners can';t collect on insurance, because most policies specifically EXclude civil unrest!

I was talking to a friend of ours who has a friend who had to move into a new house on June 1. She tried to rent a U-Haul (or any brand) of truck this weekend to move her belongings. She tried place after place after place- she couldn't find a truck ANYWHERE. Seems they had ALL been rented wherever she called! I guess we know now this was carefully orchestrated.

Totally agree. The same was said here about most people arrested being from out of town. There were people on the ground that actually saw with their own eyes how the protests turned from peaceful to utter chaos. It's sad because these groups are getting g exactly what they wanted, and the cause is getting lost.

what happened with George Floyd was unfortunate and was a public execution that even some innocent by standers had to witness and even kids. It;s one thing for this to take place in the city where this actually happened, but now its spreading to places so far away from Minnesota. Even as of last night the rioting has taken place in my city of Pittsburgh, PA. These people are rioting and even getting innocent by standers hurt for no reason. They steal, damage property hurting other people's businesses, and they are only doing it to use this Floyd incident as an excuse to steal.

The solution though isn't to do what they are doing. The riots that occurred in MN already got the job done, the police officer has already been charged with 3rd degree murder which isn't enough. However there is still a trial for him to reach and be given his true verdict. The real solution is for to make it a rule and make it a federal law that applies to every state, which is to give sworn in police officers to serve and protect to be given equal punishment if they were to break the law.

I think this concept was once known as "mob mentality" but that name has some connotations that may not always be applicable.

Yes, riots will detract from the message and this is an instance on which most Caucasians agree. The riots were not necessary to get out attention.

Having equal rights under the law does not mean that none of us - black or white - will never be the victim of an injustice of monumental proportions. I don't think the city of Minneapolis will say that what happened here was accepted police procedure. All that we can realistically expect is to have a system which monitors itself and self-corrects when bad cops do bad things.

Their is also evidence that much of the violence was initiated by other groups that is in Minneapolis most of the people they arrested were from out of town. That said group think is a thing. We know from studies that people will go along with a group even if they know that the group is wrong. This originally was done with a study where a group of ten people were in a room and told to answer questions. However only one of the people their was an actual participant the others where plants. The nine would answer questions wrong, ones that were obviously wrong to see what the one real participant would do. They routinely sided with the group even though they knew they were wrong and even changed their initial answer to conform to the group.

However the riots are a sign of moral degeneration or rather people who never actually had to test their morality. As Jordan Peterson put it, these people have never faced their shadow, never acknowledged the darker parts of themselves and as such they believed they were good people simply by existing. They were never challenged and were always under the watchful eye of society. Yet when you have the ability to blend into the crowd and the implicit permission to forsake values by following the group, you now no longer have societal pressure and the risk of consequence forcing morality on you. These people who have never been tested then succumb to group think the quickest. Frequently they even express shock that they were even capable of doing what they had did.

The only real way to mitigate the affects of group think is to be able to challenge yourself, to condition yourself to be comfortable with intellectual confrontation, to be comfortable being the odd man out, and being aware of who you really are (not the you that exists because of the constraints of society), and to be aware of this bias and tendency to begin with so you can compensate for it.

In the end, group think is damaging, individually we can be intelligent but humans have a natural inclination to abandon that intellect for the security of the group more often then not which ironicaly usually leads to greater insecurity in the long run.

I can relate to this post in a way - during my last week at work - I accidentally hurt somebody unintentionally - I checked up on them an they were fine within 3 hours so it wasn't a serious thing but I got laid off because of CoVid 3 days after unintentionally hurt my co worker along with the other people who worked alongside me and a guy who never liked me for reasons I could not figure out lied and told his friends he thought I did it on purpose cause I wanted to collect employment insurance and CERB without working a job to get the money - then his friends started making fun of me and insulting me at work - here I was this girl - alone with not a single friend at work since all my friends had quit their jobs - and a crowd of 10+ guys making fun of me and openly insulting me and bullying me at my jobs with no management to protect me - plus I don't have a lot of muscle and these guys were big and tough and strong - it hurt me so bad I thought i'd have a mental break down if this situation continued - luckily - it happened during my last week at work so within 1 week due to lay offs - I left and never spoke to those jerks again - it puzzled me - why a crowd of 9 guys would think it was okay to bully a single and isolated girl at work but now this explains their behaviour better.

It might true but the main point this match blew out of control is because are angry with how they are being treated in this country. Everyone is being treated like shit in some way or fashion. Others get more of the brunt than others. It is not right. We are suppose to be United States citizens guaranteed our rights, our liberties and our lively hood. I notice all the time, especially in America media outlets write headlines like “white cop shoots black man”, “black man attacks white couple” and I always thought how divisive that was. Seriously what does the race matter unless it was a racist attack? It doesn’t and if you look into these stories with such headlines you will find 90% of the time race had nothing to do with the crime in question. Just like poor Floyd recently.

Why do they write these headlines?

The mainstream media are a dying industry, losing control of the narrative. Being replaced quite rapidly by online independent media, who are far more trusted than mainstream sources. A chief editor at the Guardian could have a journalist want to expose pedophilia in Hollywood lets say, a private investigation would cost roughly £500,000 and could result in no story. On the other hand, another journalist can write a piece about sexism, racism, bigotry in the workplace, get tons of clicks resulting in thousands of pounds profit from marketing within a few days. This is the state of modern journalism, racism sells just like sex, racial tensions are clickbait like a massive pair of tits, people can’t resist the urge to feel virtuous.

Now when the buildings were being burned I wonder did someone make sure a black person didn't own that business because something like this can destroy a person's whole world. I haven't read the book but I wonder if he justified why it exists and whether there is a positive side to it. For example... humans survived because we were in groups and could support each other. Group think is easy and ensures surivival as we coagulate together... we are stronger.

I'd venture to say every tribe of every country in time was group think... aligning on common goals and acting upon those, even if everyone did not agree. Thus, the leaders... which are often the worst of teh bunch, the most aggressive, or most vocal... determine how the group proceeds?

People are wildin’ right now. Some the right way, some the wrong way. Boston had a real peaceful march going on. According to a lot of people on Twitter, the cops touched off the violence by showing up in riot gear and throwing tear gas before anyone got violent. Heard others saying shit was cool til white kids started throwing bottles. One chick was saying it was cool until “whiteboys wanted to start living out their Joker daydreams”, lmao. Unfortunately, people started looting, but I don’t think a lot of them were even part of the protests, they just saw an opportunity and took advantage. Cars were circling the block, dropping people off to grab what they could, then picked them back up and rolled out. Crazy shit. And sadly, that’s what people will think of when they think of the protests, not the actual message. But yeah, you can just see mob mentality taking over everywhere right now. Gonna be a long, violent summer, I think.

We had the same issue in Lebanon this year prior to the corona situation.
We had an uprising with road blockage and destructive behaviour.
Though the initial intentions were honorable it quickly escalated to anarchy and honestly I found they didn't even share the same voice eventually.
I didn't what exactly they want and what they want to do. It was just anger and destruction overall without any planning for the future to actually better the situation.
Like the situation is fucked anw so let's fuck it up more cause it can't get any worse... but it did.

I think the one they charged with 3rd degree murder will get a reduced prison sentence, and the other 3 will be let go. That won’t be sufficient. After all if a man killed your friend and 3 stood guard, would you be ok with him getting say, 10 years in jail and the others not even charged?

@Agape93 Oh id be pissed off. People are pushing for murder 1 which wouldn't even stick. It requires premeditation and planning, and murder 2 is no planning just intent. It would be impossible to prove intention. The reason they went with third degree is its the most likely to stick. So i might be pissed off about the choice, i would understand the logic. These people are beyond logic it seems. The other three being let go is messed up though. They need to be charged as accessories.

The way they see it is this: we have been oppressed for 400 years. Slavery, societal repression, targeted arrests, killings and racism. They kill us and we can’t stop them. We protest peacefully and nothing changes. We beg and nothing happens. Oh what? Another was murdered on camera and they won’t do anything meaningful? Ok, it’s time to fight.

Sometimes it’s best to give in to what the mob wants. I guarantee you give all 4 murder 2 and lock them up for life, this riot would stop because justice would be served.
