I’m terrified that my girlfriend is getting surgery, what do I do?

Anonymous
My girlfriend and I don’t live close to each other (different cities) but I get to always visit her during college breaks when we are both not studying. We’ve been together for 4 years. To me she’s the love of my life. For a couple months, my girlfriend has been having headaches and she thought it was because of her condition she had as a kid and had to have surgery because of it to install something near her skull to relieve headaches and she thought the device wasn’t working since it’s been almost 10 years ever since her last check up with her dr since she was doing fine. So 2 months ago my girlfriend said she was going to get a normal check up and was a small chance she would need surgery, which scared me because of the thought of her getting put to sleep and having surgery done on her. With that check up the dr said she was fine and didn’t need surgery (I felt so relieved) and said for her just to get X-rays to be sure and for records. She got her x-rays done weeks ago. today my girlfriend called my cellphone right after I was done with my classes, I asked her if everything was alright, she told me calmly that she just took a look at her x-rays for the first time and saw that the device near her skull fell apart at some point in the past couple months and so she went her dr again with the x-rays. I asked if she was going to be alright and she told me yes and that she’s going to need surgery. I immediately felt this panic in me and even cried a little and she could tell I was afraid and told me she’s going to be okay and didn’t seem afraid. She doesn’t know yet when she’s getting surgery but she’s going to tell me when she knows. What I’m terrified about with the surgery is what if something bad happens to her? What if the surgery affects her memory to where she’s completely forgotten about us?(her past surgeries have left her with a small case of dementia, but it’s not severe). I don’t know what to do especially since we are not near each other. Please help
