When someone says that your partner is lucky to have you, it is a compliment or means something else?

Today we had the first home pool party of the year, and among the invitees we had my business associate of my other question What do you do when a couple fights in front of you?

She came on her own this time, because her husband was sick, or so she said. We were having some drinks while my wife was swimming in the pool, and during our conversation it came to me to say that I am very lucky to have her. She replied that instead she's lucky to have me and joked that if she was in her place she too would have "rushed to bake out babies" to make to keep me, referring to her pregnancy.

I took it as a compliment, but I can't help to also think she's bitter and having problems at home and this her way of unloading.

It's both.

It IS a compliment. And, you're right too. You and your wife are both lucky to have each other. Not as in possession in the purest sense of the world, but in being a team, a couple, married.

But, for her (and I recall your first question that introduced us to them) I think it's both a compliment but also a rueful way for her to unload and lament and regret.

I did take notice that her comments seem more rueful and sad than envious or malicious.
I was at their weddding when they married and I wonder what the hell happened to make it so bad.

Probably so.
She's not a colleague though, she's someone with whom I do business with. She's not an elected official.

I think that the husband has his blames too, but I agree it's not good that she vents this way to other people.
Worst thing is, they got married last year.

In my opinion it doesn't help that she's 26 or 27 while the husband is 49.
