Why do people generally want attractive kids?

Why do a large percentage of people seem to want their children to be conventionally attractive or good looking?

My friend for example says her biggest aspiration in life is to marry an attractive guy so that she can have a daughter who is beautiful. People also tend to comment on me and my boyfriend's looks, saying we're an attractive couple and how attractive our children will be and how that's a good thing. I feel like this is also a big reason why we seek out conventionally attractive mates: so our children will be attractive.

Why do looks matter so much? Especially with our children, where character, values and kindness should matter more?

As much as we want to think looks and superficiality are not integral to someone's success, it is. We are naturally prejudice by what we perceive and it's just a reality. So having the goal of having attractive children is subjectively important for their long term outlook on life.

Its a good question , I think the last part yes of course character matters.

But , its catch 22 , you want the best for your children and you tend to think that life is going to be easier for them if they are attractive.

Why do looks matter so much? Chicken and egg problem. Your friend is very shallow about it but it is true that beautiful people have a much easier path in life. So there is merit to the ambition.
