I call it the kung flu or wu flu. Rolls off the tongue better. And i could care less if anyone thinks its racist. Im also told im a sexist and homophobe so why should i care about being a racist now too? Lmao
Its abit stupid but not racist. Its from China but its also believed to be from bats so thats like bird flu being called Hong Kong Fever or swine flu being called the Mexican virus. People being afraid of Asians and Asian food is just funny.
Spanish flu, Ebola, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme Disease and other ailments are also named for the places discovered or most associated with them.
This virus spreads so easily that a geographical place name is not as useful. Just saying from a scientific perspective...

If a virus was named neutrally following a certain country name or even the country itself claimed the virus to honour the memories of those who lost their life. Then sure why not. A few days ago I was walking to supermarket and a homeless guy called me Chink and told me to fuck off. Of course I’m not saying all society is like that but I’m definitely more on edge now these days.

@Asker China has introduced some changes like there's been a country wide ban on eating dogs and Wuhan has banned the sale of wildlife. The Chinese government is trying to improve some things but too many people just blindly want revenge that is not possible to satisfy...

Concerning the video you saw, there are sick twisted people everywhere. The same happened in the UK and in my country too. Some people are just crazy. @Asker wet markets are not the sole reason for disease. It’s more broadly tied to intensive agriculture and deforestation. These practices pushed bats into human habitats which ultimately contributed to the disease. Having a wet market in and of itself can not start a pandemic. China is just unlucky in that it’s trying to feed it’s population but then increases the risk for disease. Of course wet markets don’t help but the true reason is deeper...
If people have to blame something maybe like “PRC virus“ is even more sensible. “Chinese virus” just too inflammatory I think.

@Asker my opinion regarding the wet market is the same as yours. I understand and I am aware of what the @theChineseWASP is saying concerning other factors contributing to the risk of an outbreak but those are not as significant. All over the world humans are distroying wilde animals habitats but outbreaks like this rarely happen. And the number of outbreaks throughout history that are linked to wet markets/ wild markets are not something we should minimize and/ or turn a blind eye to.
Now do I blame the Chinese people? absolutely no. Do I hold policy makers and the educated society in China accountable and responsible? definitely yes. We should be able to criticize behaviors without offending anyone or people getting defensive. That's the only way we can grow and for the human civilization to progress. Does calling the virus 'The Chinese Virus' helps with anything? No it doesn't and it is more of school backyard name calling and bullying behavior.

The reason it is known as the "Spanish flu" is because the Spanish media was the only one willing to report on it, rather than sweep in under the rug like everyone else was doing, and the Spanish were not happy with that. SARS Cov2 is much more informative name than just “Chinese Virus”.

There’s lots of Chinese Orion all around the world and they should not be unfairly associated with the virus. If anything it should be called “Wuhan flu” since that’s a more accurate geography.
