This is a weird thing that could happen only in the country of massive weirdness, the USA. What is white or not in America is a misconception. American whiteness has nothing to do with skin colour. Because you are weird people.
In America you are white when you are like the Anglo-American ethnic group. In fact, the stereotypical traits of white in the United States are those of the English Calvinist. These are not the traits of the Germans, the Italians, the Russians, the Poles, the Swedes, the Finns, the French, the Belgians, but the English one only.
The United States is the only country where the population with the most blondes in the world, the Finns, has been non-white. Finns were non-white to Americans, which has never been the craziest thing, unbelievable. When I read the article in which it was written there, I laughed. Many other peoples were non-whites, the Russians, the Poles, or the Irish Reds and Hungarians.
Initially there was talk of "free white person", i. e., a Protestant landowner. The anti-Catholic / anti-Orthodox view is predominant in what Americans is believed to be white or non-white in the United States. With the war of independence there is an increase in the political weight of the Anglo-Saxon Protestant (Calvinist) component which aims to consider only the Protestant Anglo-Saxons white. Therefore, Americans considered non-white all European not protestants.
In the mid-nineteenth century scientific racism arrives. Anthropologists catalogued by measures of the skull or their face. The Americans consider Nordic people to be white, and people with Celtic traits except the Irish.
There has always been a strong anti-Catholic stigma in the US. But in the case of southern Italians, who are 90% of Italian immigrants to the US, this was even greater. Large parts of Italian immigrants were from the south, from Sicily and Naples. An interesting book of this argument is “Whiteness of a Different Color” written by Matthew Frye Jacobson.
Anthropometries at the time was a science. It was used by the first criminologist Dr. Lomborso an Italian scholar of Jewish origins. He thought that criminal behaviour was biologically motivated. Therefore, the propensity to be criminal was an atavistic flaw inherited from the parents. Being a hereditary thing, it was visible in the somatic features of the subject. Lombroso's studies were based on a sample of prisoners in a large part of southern Italy. Therefore, his test had a sample selection bias. That is, it predicts that all those who have the facial features typical of certain populations of southern Italy are criminals. Inhabitants of southern Italy were labelled as biologically inferior, semi-barbarians or complete barbarians, by natural destiny, or also an ethnic group akin to Blacks (with N).
At the time Italian positive criminology was what the most advanced science American government believed it completely. This fuelled a huge stigma against southern Italians who came to the United States. In fact, in the migratory records of the United States, apartheid between southern Italians and the rare Italian of the north is noted. Even in period sociological studies they are found as distinct groups. The American state touched what it found in the books of Italian criminologists, it found certain people who in Italy were naturally considered criminals who were prone to crime, a litmus test. Lombroso's theories were discredited as pseudo-science in 1914. But the damage was done.12 Reply- +1 y
Part2:
The southern Italian emigrated to make quick money and go home. They were not interested to be assimilated by a host society, compared to the north Italian immigrants that were assimilated in a generation. Usually, southern Italian immigrants where not prone to learn English. As a consequence, they were trapped in an ethnic social network to find a job. Italians who had come to the country as “free white persons” were often marked as black because they accepted “black” jobs in the Louisiana sugar fields or because they chose to live among African Americans.
One of the determinants of the aversion to southern Italians was also their deployment during the American Civil War. Northern and Southern Italians generally sided with their respective American latitudes. The northern Italians mostly volunteers of Lombard, Venetian, Piedmontese or Genoese origin sided with the Unionist army. On the other hand, those of the south mostly veterans of the former Bourbon army sided with the Confederate army entering the Italian Guards Battalion which later became part of its 6th Regiment. At the end of the war the press of the former northerners had no mercy in discrediting the southern Italians. In particular, the New York Times became the main enemy of southern Italians. The Times, described them as bandits and members of the criminal classes who were "wretchedly poor and unskilled," "starving and wholly destitute." It described immigrants, including Italians, as "links in a descending chain of evolution." In an 1882 editorial that appeared under the headline "Our Future Citizens." The editors wrote: "There has never been since New York was founded so low and ignorant a class among the immigrants who poured in here as the Southern Italians who have been crowding our docks during the past year."

Part 3:
They often did the same jobs that black people did. Therefore, they were economically emarginate. This created a vicious circle of stigma. In fact, southern Italians remained poor for generations and only in the end of 1940s did they started to move out of segregated neighbourhoods.
Marcell Jacobs is the son of an Italian and an African American.
Italians all over the world are white, perhaps not in America.

But we are not English, Scots, Irish or Scandinavian either. Most of the Central European Countries are Germanic, like Germany, Cezh, Austria and Eastern Euro Countries are Russo, or Pols like Russian and Poland and all mixed up in between. All of which are Western European countries... Italians are Latin, and the English and Scandinavian (which are the whitest of the white) countries have always resented main land European Countries and especially the Southern European Latin nations.
This because Latins are primarily Roman Catholic and protestant, or evangelicals... and and therefore protestant where discriminated against in these countries... and the US was founded by protestant type pilgrims which were considered to be religious zealots, and pretty fanatical at the time and encouraged to leave England and settle the new world out of all the moderates religious people way.11 Reply- +1 y
An Italy has a high population of North African Immigrants from Morocco and Tunisia. And remember that Italy was the home of the Roman Empire... so Italy had more of a Middle Eastern and North African flavor... from the Roman Eastern Empire, that stretched across modern day Turkey, across Syria, Israel, Egypt all the way across North Africa to Morocco into Spain and across Southern France... so Roman (Italian) blood is pretty mixed given the Roman slave trade and sex trade, and all the soils of gained by the conquerors. So a lot of Italians have mixed blood in their lines at some point all the way back to the Roman times... and the Roman Empire was founded by Greek refugees, and at that time Greek and Turkey were pretty much culturally and ethically mainly mixed Greek/Middle Eastern from the day of Alexander the Great. So Italians where always way more culturally and ethnically diverse then Scandinavian and English people, but still white by todays standards. Just regarded as less white, and more loyal to the Pope in Roman than to any monarch in Europe... so all the old European Kings and Queens thought of Italians as lesser subjects, disloyal cheats, and criminals of mixed heritage.
So someone very close to me is italian.
I can tell you what she told me.
They kinda get mixed feelings.
Up till the mafia became a movie icon italians were not considered white, once mainstream America made it cool to be Italian, they were adopted into white culture.

Italians are white, but their DNA varies. Most northern Italians are descended from Gauls, Celts, and Germanic tribes that invaded from the north and settled with the Etruscans and other native groups. From Rome on down, the Romans brought in a lot of slaves from Egypt, north Africa, Syria, and places like that, so that's why southern Italy has a lot of people with darker hair and darker skin tone. It's interesting, because northern Italy seems to be the area where there's car manufacturing, fashion industry, and most of Italy's money. Southern Italy is about 100 years in the past, where they grow olives, make pizza, and have a higher crime rate.

+1 yIn Europe, they are.
We consider all Europeans here white, which includes also the Portuguese, Spanish, Greek and Italian people.
Here we don't have that yummy victim culture that the US has, because everyone is the majority in their respective countries.
Calling yourself non-white isn't going to yield any benefit when you are the 95% majority in your own country.
If anything, it's going to make others think you are a retard, or an American tourist (interchangeable).21 Reply- +1 y

Italians are unusual in that they have the sun kissed Sicily region where Italians are mostly olive skinned. Then regions like Lombardy which are baltic at times and people of paler complexions.
You'll rarely have Italians calling themselves "white," though hooligans and fascists do so mostly for the aesthetics ; and get dually laughed at.
But you should have stuck around for that "white person" getting laughed at for using "mud blood" like some edgy, autistic, dipshit.10 ReplyYour knowledge is all over the place - I'm Italian - Most people in Northern and central Italy (myself included) are white as fuck - You only see Italians that are more on the brown side in Southern Italy - They'd definitely either be from greek ancestry (then again most of Southern Italy have greek ancestry and most of them are still white, just like greeks are considered white with some being more brown than to be white) - or one of their grandparents or parents is not European - which is the more likely scenario.. by the way Alyssa Milano is white as fuck too, thank god I played far cry 6 and watched breaking bad so I know who Esposito is, his mother is black, and the dude who you put his picture as an example of a "brown" Italian has "Jacobs" as his family name - That doesn't sound like some great renaissance family now does it? Like maybe just maybe he recently got that nationality from someone who happens to be Italian from his family who isn't at all Italian?

I would of thought that all European folks were considered white but yeah Italians along Greeks, Spanish and Portuguese can be an exception because not only are their skin slightly darker by default but they sure are hell dont hunk when they talk like most white folks do.
but oh well maybe the italian-americans can be white because the majority of them are obviously mixed. and according to movies like A Bronx Tale its safe to say that italians do get pigeon hole as whites either way10 Reply3.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Wow, it is 2022 and the ignorance is astounding. Race is a 19th century pseudo-scientific theory to define humans by physical appearance. It is a defunct concept yet a widely followed construct. It is a convenient way to divide people into tribes that are easier to control by the political overseer class. There is one race, Homo sapiens.

The guy that grew up next door to where I live now is full-blooded Italian. He was at least as dark as Prince and almost looked exactly like him! I HARDLY call that, white. Sure, a lot of them are, especially from the northern end of Italy but, other nationalities are usually much whiter!

Exactly!! I was watching a video the other day of some guy that said he took one of those tests to find out what nationalities you are and his response was that he is 100% English!! The people doing the testing RARELY EVER see a result come back as 100%!!

Yeah! I'll bet!! I know I'm at least 4 or 5 nationalities, possibly more!

I’ve never really wondered what all I could be mixed with I grew up around people of all races and I never really learned what racism was until I was about 13 I never thought someone would mistreat me just because of my skin color because that’s silly I saw it as they’re being rude or mean because they’re just an asshole not racist like it just really bothers me out of all the reasons to not like someone they pick the pettiest one and Franco is retired but he is a hall of famer and Steelers Royalty because he played with them for 12 years and speaking of cheerleaders have you seen LFL players it’s lingerie football for girls 🤩 you should check it out

I kinda had racism forced onto me from both sides of my family but, I never went in for it at all. I could never see the point of it! I was just watching a documentary on The Turtles, last night and, one of them mentioned how they were on a tour with a bunch of other rockers and they walked into a restaurant back in `65 that was, apparently, all white, with the black singer, Mel Carter. As soon as they went in, the place got dead silent! They sat at the country to order a meal when some guy picked up his dish of food with mashed potatoes and gravy and who knows what, walked over to Mel and smashed his plate of food into his face!! FOR WHAT? HAVING DARKER SKIN? If Mel raped the guy's daughter or shot his wife, I could see him doing that!! How is having dark skin a CRIME?
As for LFL, never heard of it. Is it anything like this?

- +1 y
@Gal67 that’s a negative sir the southeast Asians originated from the Maori people who also came from Africa via the Middle East and as I previously stated they share they same ancestors with Caucasians and this being the case the earliest europeans had dark skin and blue eyes I’m not saying they were black but they were definitely brown and did you guys watch the video that enema joke was a good one cmon😂
- +1 y
That's nonsense. At that point why don't you just say we're all African if you go back far enough?
- +1 y
@AllThatSweetJazz In a way we are all Mankind originated from Africa do a little research the traits and characteristics we have now that makes us look different are the results of a mutated genome that originated from africa ever been to New Mexico tons of people there look very white but they’re about as Mexican as you can be the aryan people that you call white their ancestors originated from Africa and migrated to the Middle East and parts of Eastern Asia human bodies are made to adapt and evolve mutated genes made white , Indians and orientals they all share the same ancestors
- +1 y
Yes... That's what *I'm* saying... and it's to illustrate that you're being ridiculous by tracing lineage too far back to the point of absurdity.
- +1 y
@AllThatSweetJazz whats absurd about it though
- +1 y
Because it means white people aren’t white either. The entire question evaporates. There would therefore be no “real” white people because there would be only Africans and no one else.
- +1 y
@AllThatSweetJazz that depends on what you consider a real white person because anyone can be white and anyone can be black except two white people can't make a black baby but two black people can make a white baby
- +1 y
It's completely absurd, because after ~50.000 years nothing resembles the Maoris with "the Europeans". Just see the differences various settler groups in Russia have with their home countries after only four generations (~100 years). Your example is simply ridiculous.

@DryGermanGuy I’m not gonna sit here and try to convince you either you want to know the truth or you don’t you Can say it’s absurd all you want but people who dedicate their lives to stuff like this say that’s what happened if you don’t believe it fine but don’t say it’s not true if you don’t have evidence to say otherwise

Hey I don’t know how this is coming off to you but let me just say I have nothing against Italians I have many Italian cousins in Ohio and it bothered me that even though they’re white other white people would see them as inferior like how black people would treat a lighskinned black person I heard this Cuban woman talk about how her stepdad was unfair and mistreated her because her skin was darker than her siblings but they were all Cuban and it was just messed up to me it’s fucked up
- +1 y
Ok I was really thinking that you had something against Italians. I'm glad you don't.
I'm black and I feel that I need to explain you something. It's not that we see light skinned black people as inferior. What happens is that some dark skinned black people see the light skinned ones as superior and some light skinned blacks also see themselves as superior.
What this woman was experiencing was something called colorism which is a form of racism. - +1 y
I knew why black people didn’t like them during slavery because the lighter skinned ones got special treatment because they were white so black people didn’t like them and they weren’t fully white so white people didn’t like them it ironic to me because you’d think someone who is both would be accepted by both
