Tried to arrange friendly activities and he just completely ignore the invite, he’s never done that before. When I asked him if everything was okay he just replies really abruptly like ‘fine’ when I know him well enough now to know that it’s not the case.

He’s probably getting defensive to just mentally prepare himself for when you begin to pull away from the friendship. Essentially, if he does it first, it won’t hurt him as much.
