After breakup with best friend?

I have a best friend but we live in a different country now. We've been best friend for about 6 years. This year he confessed and we started dating. But since we are currently in a long distance, it's killed him not to see me in person and not being able to do things together. The relationship last only 3 months. He said he wants us to be back as a friend but maybe not like before.

Now, 2 months after that breakup. He seems like keep pushing me away even if i start with a light convo. Sometimes when i texted him first about something funny, he only replied with thanks and said he wants to have a rest. But sometimes he also texted me first saying he wants to talk with me and not after that he pushing me away again.

I am so confused with his behavior and whenever i asked him about it he just said he needs time to rearrange his mind cause he has a lot of problems lately but on the other side, he doesn't want to tell me about it.

Tell me what should i do? The distance between us growing apart just because we decided to date. Does it means he hate me now? And want to become a stranger?

An ex is an ex for a reason - there's no reason or good motivation to keep in contact with them unless is for work or to give them back their belongings. So I'd really consider if it's the case to resume a friendship.
I don't think he hates you, but you should consider if trying to mend the friendship will be worth it or will bring unnecessary anguish and drama to both of you. Good luck!
