Girls stare at me, guys compliment me all the time but having hard time talking to girls in university. Any insights?

The university I'm in, I'm complimented by my guy friends, acquaintances and even by some unknowns a lot, all of them being guys, some even ask if I'm modelling somewhere lol. When it comes to girls, I only talk to one as a friend and others only stare at me all the time but either look away or keep staring at me when I catch them doing so. Any help on what might possibly go through their heads or if you were a girl who saw such a guy around, what would you think?

This is something I thought of yes, but I don't want to be too assumptious to think that I am too desirable. I took a year drop before university and spend time with myself being really alone so I don't know how to read into girls that is why it confuses me a lot. The communication with my female friend and other male friends however, they say I'm very confident but not cocky.
