Why would he invite me to over to hang out with his friends when we barely know each other?

my neighbour and i (both 19) have never been close. i have tried texting him (on insta) in the past to try to get to know him a little bit. however, that always resulted in me being left on read or a two-worded response.

lately, he’s been more verbal. when we see each other, he makes small talk and asks how my day went, if i had plans for the weekend etc.

this guy is quite popular in this area and has been known to be quite a “womanizer”. some of my friends have even gone so far as to say that he’s a “fuckboy”. which automatically makes me wary of him.

recently, i was sitting outside in our common backyard (around 10pm) while him and his friends were having a “guy’s night” on his terrace. at some point, he came down and invited me over. i kindly declined saying that a friend was about to pick me up to head out (my best excuse yet). to which he answered “damn that’s too bad. let me know when you’re free though.”

i felt that it would’ve been bizarre to hang out with him, that i barely know, and his guy friends who are complete strangers to me.

was i rude to decline? should i follow up and ask him to hang out one on one first?

i’m thinking of sending him a text on the lines of “i might be free this weekend, what were you thinking of doing?” to see what he offers. if it’s something suspicious, then i’ll just leave it at that.

what do you think?
