I had a weird day with my friend. I assumed it was just hanging out as friends but my best friends said it was a date. Anyways we went out for lunch (he paid), then we went to play tennis and we chilled at the pool and drank. He called his friend and we were heading to the gas station to get some more beers and my friend came out of no where and slapped my ass as hard as he could. And later on he apologized and rubbed my butt lol. But there were some weird comments made by him which seemed like he was flirting but I really have no idea. Was he hitting on me? I've known him for two years

If you've never had that kind of 'jokey' behavior with him before then yes that is really odd, if he was trying to make a pass at you and express an interest in you romantically then there are a lot of other ways he could have done that. Seems like he had a few to drink and got out of line with a female friend that he should really have treated better.

Due to the circumstances, you could give him another chance when you're ready, and just explain that it hurt that he did that and it was disrespectful and you expect him not to do it again.
