If he’s not happy and I assume you’re probably not happy either and he says he kind of wants to break up. I think you should break the relationship off. Just text him and say you think it’s best for both of you. That if he isn’t happy anymore maybe he needs to find someone else, and you deserve to find someone whose genuinely happy being witn you. As well as pointing out that he refuses to respond to you and how cowardly it really is.
Don’t waste time with people who are like that. I know breaking up is hard and yes it is a big decision. But one that’s for the better. You’re not married to him and frankly imagine if you got married to him? If you don’t see a future and if you did get married you both would probably end up miserable, add some kids into the middle of it. I don’t think it’s worth it.

I don't think this is normal. Although I believe giving space to each other is a must in every relationship taking space out of the blue and announcing that they need space is weird behavior to me this is something that should come naturally in a relationship. You should know when to give your partner space and your partner should know when to give you space.
