Why do girls fish for compliments?

For example hot girls post a picture of her self half naked with the caption "omg I'm so fat". Clearly guys are gonna say your not fat and start giving her compliment. But my question is do these girls really think fat or do they just like the attention of guy's lusting over her?

I think it's probably an attention thing. There's this girl I used to be classmates with who was very pretty and would post tons of photo's on Facebook with captions like "I'm so ugly" & "I'm so fat". I'm pretty sure she was quite aware neither of those things were true given the fact she had about 3 different Facebook's, all containing hundreds or photos of herself and would even message me and seem to be showing off that tons of boys from our school would ask her out. I've noticed a few other girls post selfies with captions like she did as well and I have to say, I think it is attention seeking.

I mean logically, if I took a photo of myself and genuinely thought it was ugly then (unless someone was forcing me to for whatever reason) I would certainly not be posting it on social media where everyone can see it. If I post a photo online, I probably think I look good or least decent in it.

I think it could go either way. I think for some girls they want validation from boys like you say, I think for some they just enjoy attention and for others it's both.

some genuinely do feel ugly and need validation to boost their self esteem, but others are just desperate for attention. which isn't necessarily an immoral thing, but in my opinion it is a negative trait to constantly feel the need to show off your body for some strangers attention.

like 90% of women have low to no self esteem, they've grown up socially destroyed by other women more popular than them with the use of backhanded compliments and talking behind each other's backs. So these women learn that to be popular they have to be healthy and have sexual attention. The more guys sleep with them the more they think they have value but it comes with the knowledge that they don't feel like they have more value. Women learn to objectify themselves at a YOUNG age and when they realize that they've done it to themselves they blame anyone else they can trying to find a reason that they let themselves become a slut.

@Gommers although i do agree that a lot of women have low self esteem because of their surroundings and because of media (which includes heavy amounts of photoshop and major objectification of women), women do not become "sluts" because of this. much more likely men are the ones sleeping around to prove something to themselves and others. the majority of the time these "sluts" aren't actually sleeping around. they simply look provocative and have a few sexual partners. when i was in high school, every other girl was labeled a "hoe", yet half of the girls were still virgins or had like 1-3 sexual partners. there were like 3 girls who actually slept around. and like 20 guys who were just as promiscuous.

@Gommers well i was raised as a female, have had female friends all my life along with a bunch of older cousins and a sister, im constantly meeting new people and am obsessed with psychology. i dont look on the outside, im always observing others and am close to a lot of women (of different ages) who share their experiences with me which are extremely similar to mine because just like them, im a woman and know how things work for us.

Sorry to interrupt someone else's question, but what would it mean when a woman appears to fish for a compliment but then says "Please don't" when you start to give her just that? In the case I'm thinking of she has low self esteem (which she hides very well most of the time) which I think might explain it but could it be that she is just embarrassed to be receiving a compliment from the person giving it? Could this be because she secretly liked them or is it only ever going to be because she doesn't want a compliment from them. The lady and I are friends and I can't figure it out and although I have given her plenty of compliments in the past I am now reluctant to.
