Guy's Behavior

Can someone help me as to what is going on in his. Mind?

Okay so me and this guy have been having some issues. We're kind of at the point of ending it but it's like he's holding it off in a way and it's confusing. We hadn't been talking for a while until finally I texted first and said sorry and all that. Then he said basically if you do want to end things we have to do it right. That's what he said. I asked him if he specifically wanted to end things and he said we have to look at things objectively. Like uh okay what. So I said for him to just tell me and he said I'll tell you on Sunday, we can call. I'm like what's wrong with him so I said just tell me yes or no why do we have to wait 2 days. And he finally said "I believe yes. That I want to end things." And of course I'm hurt so I told him I understand but I don't want to call. I didn't want to hear why he didn't want to try anymore for us. And he said are you sure about that and I said if you want to end things then just end things. It hurts more to drag it out. And he said "because I care for you. I want to end things right." I was so confused at this point and I just said "just end it please. You don't know how much you're hurting me." And then he switched the subject and asked why I haven't texted him in so long. I don't understand him because he also hadn't been texting me at all. Can someone help me out as to what is even going on in his guy brain? Its confusing me so much.
