Why did your parents name you what they named you?

Why did your parents name you what they named you? Why did they give you the name that you have? Did they name you after a cherished friend or a deceased family member? Is there a meaning to your name?

My parents named me after the parish that they were attending when I was born. They've told me that the people there were such wonderful people and they named me after the parish as a tribute to them.

So what's the story behind your name?

as traditional for my mostly Catholic family and relatives... we were given biblical or related to the Bible names, mine especially were chosen by my great-grandma, who was the most close with my mother

also traditional, with our Mexican side of things... I was given two names + two surnames, instead of just name + surname

so, while my nickname has always or mostly been Nathan... my proper full name is Jonathan Santiago, which means something something something about the bible or god... lol

I don't know why they named me what they named me and I can't ask them because I don't ever talk to them anymore, none of my family. However I found out from a coworker that my name Kino means ugly in Maori which is what he is. Neither of my parents was Maori so I don't know if I can say this was why they gave me the name but it kind of makes sense, my mom used to call me ugly all the time and I wasn't allowed in family photos.

My name means clean water in Chinese and uses a unique word that is not found in main stream speech just like Lenora is less common than Alice as a name for girls. I was told they gave me that name because when I was born, the nurse touched my skin and said it was soft like water. Being Christian, religious faith is symbolized by water in stories so its cool I was given that name by parents that were not Christian.

"Athena" was too stupid (so glad she didn't name me that) and mom found my name in one of those baby book things and altered the spelling of the name and pronunciation, which later turned out to be a name that originated in Egypt or something, I don't know

I was named after my uncle, and a famous European actor. I can't say the specific lol because i would give my real name

My mom had an uncle, Bud Tyler. She wanted to name me after him, but my dad refused to name me Bud. My sister was a bit different. They had a list of names for her they liked and elimated one at a time. The last two names were her first and middle name, my middle name was my dad's first name. I was almost named after my dad, but my parents didn't want me to have "the fourth" after my name.

No reason really. My mom came across some white lady with the name and she liked it. As for my middle name which i truly dislike, they felt it was very fitting for a girl although they took it from my dads guy friend. Makes no sense

I don’t think there’s any special meaning to my name. My mom was gonna name me Adrian instead and then at the last minute she changed it to Justin because she liked it better I guess. She should of kept Adrian

It came from a really old Scottish novel that my father liked. It’s also the name of a more recent, but still old book, that is pretty scandalous. I was assured it was the first. lol 😁

Well my dad wanted to name me Louise Anna… I’m from Louisiana. My mom wanted me to be named after her middle name which my dad was also cool with since he had a favorite aunt whose name was the same. I’m so glad my name isn’t Louise Anna.
