There's this one lady I met recently. A nice tall Korean woman. Really chill; down-to-earth. She's just a friend, but I only just found out today she's a big-shot manager at a semiconductor company. She earns about $80K a year (115 million won annually). I was surprised, because I usually assume upper middle-class and rich people are complete snobs.

If she had no financial expectations from you and didn't care how much you made or what you did for a living, would you, as a guy, be fine dating a woman who earned at least twice as much money as you?

If he was a decent guy and had steady income and could take care of his own bills (even if he's poor), would you, as a girl, be fine dating a man who earned half as much money as you and was relatively poor?

(MEN) I'd be fine dating a woman who earned twice as much as me or more.

(MEN) I would NOT be okay dating a woman who out-earned me by so much.

(WOMEN) I'd be fine dating a man who earned much less money than me.

We both do pretty well in regards to the amount we earn relative to our degrees and time we spend earning, but I make more on an annual basis. We knew this would be the case before we ever got married. If he actually made the decision to work five days a week, as a self-employed consultant, he would do extremely well. When we had kids he told me he was ready to dial it back and be the parent with the more flexible schedule, because his work can be physical at times and we're not getting any younger. We consider ourselves fortunate to have this situation, and I have no problem with him being the lower earner.

I feel like ultimately that may be the setup we're going for. I don't have any plans for children in my future, though if it does happen I'll gladly shift my life around to accommodate. Otherwise it's just work hard to play hard

There’s more to consider than her income. If she made eleventy bazillion dollars a minute, would she still have time for me? Too many people forget that lots of money usually demands lots of hours. Is she in the tiny minority of women who can be happy with a man who earns less than she does? Is she even able to treat such a man with respect and appreciation? If the answer to all of these questions is ‘yes’, then i’ll give such a woman a chance. But since the reality is that at least one of these questions will produce an emphatic and resounding ‘no’, most likely all of them, it’s highly unlikely that i’ll ever have to face this question seriously. I have a better chance of riding a flying golden unicorn through the gates of Paradise. And that would be more funner anyway! Ell oh ell!

I'm ok with him earning less money than me. BUT I'm not looking to be someone's piggy bank either. He should be able to defend himself financially to some degree. Not to mention be willing to help around the house with cooking, cleaning, maintenance, etc.

I'd still want to earn my keep and contribute to her, but I think when it comes to relationships, I'd always have that hint of doubt about whether or not a partner would leave me for someone better, especially if they'd be out earning me.
